Our journey with the team from Harkaway Homes has been exceptional for many reasons.

We had no background in building, no previous experience and this was our first home, like many, this was the biggest project that we had undertaken in our lives.

Once the decision to become an owner builder has been made it is very reassuring to know that you will always be supported by such an exceptional experienced team, who have a clear understanding of what will be involved for the entire project and provide the flexibility in the floor plan of the house to incorporate your dreams and make your home unique.

Without doubt, the decision to be an owner builder is significant, we had no prior experience and if you asked my friends they would testify I am no handyman. At the end of the build, we felt that it has been one of the most rewarding things we have done in our lives, we had controlled the build, saved huge amounts of money and upon completion we agreed we would not have done it any other way.

During the build there will be days that are challenging but without hesitation Andrey and I would say the result exceeded our expectations.

We are perfectionists, we stop when the job has been done right and not before. We wanted a team with the same attitude to create our new home and as you will discover with the Harkaway team, be it their team at Officer or their production crew they have this same attitude. We felt we could ask them anything, they are without doubt a wonderful back up team.

Having a recommended tradesperson list and not having to search for tradespeople is also a great advantage. These guys know what is required to build a Harkaway Home and they actually communicate with one another to ensure the project flows without too many hassles.

For most of us we will only build once so with this in mind we wanted quality products that would last a lifetime. You even determine the fittings that are going into your home, so there are no unpleasant surprises you get exactly what you want.

Everyone without exception when they walk into our home goes WOW! They can see the quality of the build and why a Harkawy Home is a timeless statement of classic Australian architecture design that is traditional and will never look out-dated.

Dealing with Harkaway and building our dream home has truly been one of life’s pleasures. The entire process was stress free (except for choosing the style from so many authentic and gorgeous options !) because of the streamlined and efficient Harkaway system. Our builder was delighted to work with Harkaway as he had previous experience with them and we felt totally supported throughout the build. Two years on and I still look at our home with amazement and pride. Thankyou Harkaway – you are a breath of fresh air amongst all the tedious bricks and mortar of modern homes.

We had found our block in Tasmania, and wanted to build a home with a veranda which looked like it had been in the area for 100 years but with better plumbing. Finding a suitable design was not easy and many of the displays we saw were disappointing in the finishes. That is, until we saw Harkaway’s advertising in one of the many kit home books we had purchased.

Surprisingly, a visit to their display in Officer confirmed what we had read in the ad. The detail and quality of finishes, was in our opinion far above anything else we had seen at the many display homes and the authentic touches to the federation era was just what we had in mind.

On meeting Ray, he gave us some great suggestions, time to discuss our ideas and clearly explained why some things we wanted wouldn’t work technically also meeting with our chosen builder to discuss any specific questions he had with the plans. Ray also helped us to prepare a list for council approval and made further suggestions for the compilation of a list and cost estimates for internal fittings and finishes that we would complete after the lock up had been achieved.

During the build the Harkaway team was only a phone call away if questions arose. Even if the problem was only specific to our site, they worked with our contractors until a solution was found, returned calls quickly and we never felt “fobbed off”. Our first experience as owner builders could not have been made easier and it was greatly due to the choosing the right people.

Today two years later we are putting the finishing touches on what is described in the area as a landmark home. We sit on our veranda each day and it is every bit as enjoyable as we first imagined when we stood on an empty site.

We've build a beautiful Harkaway Home in 2010 in the High Country.

Of course it was a lot of work getting the house built on top of everything else that was going on, but we made it and now enjoy the most gorgeous house coming home every day to.

We can not rave enough about the outstanding support of the whole Harkaway Homes Team, their patience, effort and willingness to help us through every single stage of planning and building the house.

If we had to build again, it definitely would be another Harkaway Home.

The whole experience of building through you guys made the process so much easier, as Jason and I had never built before we were quite daunted by the whole thing but Harkaway made it so much easier. People were always on the other end of the phone when we had questions to ask and the advice on different things during the planning stage was fantastic. Although we knew what we wanted the small suggestions made to us really helped and has ended in us building a home that we absolutely love. I always say that if ever we had to move, I would go if I could take the house with us, we love it.

We would like to say thank you to Harkaway for being so helpful and for providing us with such a quality home that we love. We never hesitate in telling people that we built a Harkaway home and how happy we are with it. If we were to ever build again we would definitely build another Harkaway Home.

Our house is so comfortable to live in and our electricity bills are half that of the small cottage on the property. We have a solid fuel heater for winter and do not need any other heating or air-conditioning. Goes to show a house can be both beautiful and sustainable. Our experience working with Harkaway was wonderful and we often tell others about it.
