Circa 1860 on. Probably the most recognised and admired roofline from the Victorian era. The Victorian Traditional or also known as the Victorian Doublefront and as the name suggests, this roofline is essentially two Victorian single fronts attached. High ceilings and a central hallway created the air-conditioning of the day - while verandahs shaded the home, central hallways acted as a breezeway, especially when that long awaited cool change finally arrived. French Doors feeding onto the shady verandahs added further functionality to the home.
The classic Doublefront might have verandah on all sides, however a front verandah would suffice if block space was not available.
Victorian Traditionals were built across Australian cities and towns from the most basic of cottages to the grand homes of the Goldrush era.
This magnificent roofline was also incorporated into many of the old buildings and public houses of the time.
